History of Bonifay Fire Department

Throughout the history of the Bonifay Fire Department, beginning in the early 1940s, volunteer firefighters consisted of several business owners who had the ability and dedication to stop what they were doing and answer the call. The volunteer firefighter roster has been enriched with many family members including multiple father/son pairs as well as brothers fighting fire along side one another. We can identify as many as 9 different families who served together. We still hold several traditions near to our heart such as bringing Santa to town the second Saturday of each December. From the beginning, firefighters have been compensated on a per call basis. Originally at $2/call. As of 2023, the going compensation rate is $10/call and each firefighter is paid annually the same night Santa comes to town.
